The Down East Sunrise Trail

Rail service of the 127 mile Calais Branch Railroad Corridor began in 1898. Locals could hear the whistle blow each morning as the train traveled on its daily journey from Calais to Brewer.  The train service ceased in 1984 after more than 80 years of service. A plan was later developed for a multi-use trail along the 87-mile section of the corridor between Ayers Junction and Washington Junction. The Down East Sunrise Trail, developed by the Sunrise Trail Coalition, was completed in the fall of 2010. You can still see some of the old telegraph poles that remain.
